Svādhyāya: The Gentle Practice of Knowing Yourself
September always feels like a turning point. The light shifts, the air softens, and something inside us begins to settle. As we observe National Yoga Awareness Month, it becomes an especially meaningful time to explore Svādhyāya, the yogic practice of self‑study — not the kind that critiques or judges, but the kind that listens deeply. Svādhyāya invites us to pause, turn inward, and observe ourselves with compassion. It’s a reminder that knowing ourselves — our patterns, our needs, our inner landscape — is an act of love. Listening as a Way of Serving In my full‑time day job, I am blessed to help people. Every day I sit with individuals who share their stories, their struggles, their hopes. I listen carefully so I can understand how to best support them. It’s a privilege to witness people in their truth. As a yoga teacher, trainer, and mentor, I carry that same intention into every class. I watch my yogis closely—not to evaluate, but to understand. I adjust the practice based on what I see: a shoulder that needs softening, a breath that needs space, a heart that needs gentleness. My goal is always to support each person to the best of my ability. But here’s the truth I’ve learned over the years: I can only serve well when I am present. And I can only be present when I take time to study myself. The Self We Meet on the Mat Self‑study isn’t about perfection. It’s about noticing. Noticing when the mind is busy. Noticing when the heart feels tender. Noticing when the body needs rest, or strength, or stillness. When I carve out time to sit quietly—no agenda, no rush—I can feel what’s happening inside me. My breath tells me how I’m doing. My body tells me what it needs. My heart tells me what it’s carrying. This inner listening is what allows me to show up fully for others. It’s what keeps me grounded, compassionate, and steady. Why September Matters September’s theme of Svādhyāya is a gentle reminder of how important this practice is. As the season shifts, we’re invited to shift too—toward reflection, toward awareness, toward understanding ourselves more deeply. It’s a beautiful time to ask:
A Practice for the Month Throughout September, our classes will weave in moments of mindful observation:
A Closing Thought Svādhyāya teaches us that self‑study is not selfish. It’s essential. When we know ourselves, we can meet the world with clarity, steadiness, and love. Thank you for allowing me to walk this path with you—listening, learning, and growing together. May this September be a month of gentle discovery, deep breath, and compassionate awareness. May we continue to know ourselves with kindness. Workshop Invitation — A Natural Extension of Svādhyāya If this month’s exploration of Svādhyāya has stirred something inside you — a curiosity, a longing for deeper understanding, or simply a desire to continue this inward journey — I warmly invite you to join me for a special virtual workshop on the Yamas and Niyamas. These foundational teachings of Yoga offer a compassionate roadmap for living with clarity, integrity, and self‑awareness. They help us understand not only how we relate to the world, but how we relate to ourselves — which is the heart of Svādhyāya. In this workshop, we’ll take a thoughtful, accessible dive into Yoga philosophy and self‑study, exploring how these principles can support your daily life, your relationships, and your inner growth. Just like our September theme, this session is designed to be gentle, reflective, and deeply nourishing. If you feel called to continue this journey inward, I would love to share this experience with you. For more info click here Workshops. With Gratitude, Oma
