July arrives in Arizona with its unmistakable intensity — long days, blazing sunshine, and temperatures that remind us just how powerful the element of Fire can be. Instead of resisting the heat, this month we explore how to work with it, letting it inspire our yoga practice, our breath, and our inner growth.
In yoga philosophy, Fire (Agni) represents transformation, courage, digestion (of food and of life), clarity, and purposeful action. It’s the spark that helps us move forward, shed what no longer serves, and step into our next season with strength and intention. As B.K.S. Iyengar reminds us, “Yoga doesn’t just change the way we see things, it transforms the person who sees.” This month, we honor that transformation — the steady, glowing fire within each of us. Embracing the Arizona Heat as a Teacher Living and practicing in Arizona gives us a unique relationship with Fire. The summer heat can feel overwhelming, but it also offers a powerful reminder: We are capable of holding warmth, intensity, and challenge — without burning out. When we step onto the mat in July, we practice being present with sensation. We soften where we can, strengthen where we need to, and remember: “I am accepting of every experience as a chance to learn and grow.” This mantra becomes our anchor — in the heat, in the fire of transformation, and in the everyday moments that shape us. Building the Inner Fire (Tapas) In yoga, tapas refer to the disciplined, steady heat that builds through mindful effort. It’s not about pushing harder — it’s about showing up with intention. In July’s classes, we’ll explore:
Practical Summer Tip: Hydrate with Intention Arizona summers require mindful hydration — not just drinking water but replenishing what the heat draws out. A few simple practices:
